Aurelia Working with Local Schools

With cuts happening across  the public sector, Local Authorities have had to make difficult decisions about the amount of training they provide. Unfortunately, this has meant that staff in schools (Teaching Assistants in particular) have found that there are limited opportunities to keep up to speed with developments and maintain their CPD.

As a private training provider, Aurelia had a request from the Head teacher at Parkgate Primary School in Coventry about the possibilities of providing accredited courses for their staff. Through the Apprenticeship Programme, Aurelia has been able to utilise the skills of its staff to develop and deliver a Higher Level Apprenticeship course for Teaching Assistants through the awarding body, Edexcel.

In September this year, eight Teaching Assistants form Parkgate were inducted for the Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification, choosing a variety of Optional Units such as ‘Supporting Bilingual Learners’, ‘Supporting Gifted and Talented Learners’ and ‘Leading an Extra Curricular Activity’. Additionally, they will also undertake Functional Skills training in English, Maths and ICT.

At the end of the first term the group are working well, benefitting from up-to-date and insightful teaching from Aurelia staff and generous support from the school.

Building on the positive start to the course at Parkgate, in the New Year we will be commencing with additional courses, not only at Parkgate, but also Alice Stevens Special School in Coventry and Ridgeway School in Worcestershire.
